Springtime Evening — Taos, New Mexico
by Dawn Chandler

A frosty early morning at New Mexico's Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. The snowgeese, swooping and swirling in great flocks over the distant fields, don't seem to mind at all.

Still There
by Santa Fe Artist Dawn Chandler

contemporary abstract ‘textual’ landscape
mixed media on panel
12” x 24” x 2

‘Still There’ is undoubtedly the most abstract of my “textual landscapes’. The underlying scene is that of looking west to Rayado Canyon — a glorious passage in the south country of New Mexico’s Philmont Ranch. A rose sunset glows through blue and rusted filters of memory — as words — thoughts — come in and out of mind. . . .
The text emerging in this painting comes from ‘The Call of the Wild,’ the epic poem by Robert Service.

I Remember, I Don't Remember
by Santa Fe Artist Dawn Chandler

contemporary abstract ‘textual’ landscape
mixed media on panel
12” x 24” x 2

The scene in ‘I Remember, I Don’t Remember’ is that of hiking in a deep canyon in the remote Cedar Mesa area of southern Utah. Indeed, look carefully and you’ll see a hiker walking in the narrow passage revealed on the righthand side of the painting. Gauzy curtains of blue and rust fade the view in and out of focus — much like our memories — as words — thoughts — come in and out of mind. . . .
The text emerging in this painting comes from ‘The Call of the Wild,’ the epic poem by Robert Service.

Have You . . . ?
by Santa Fe Artist Dawn Chandler

contemporary abstract ‘textual’ landscape
mixed media on panel
12” x 24” x 2

The scene in 'Have You . . . ?' is that of the high alpine trail leading to and from New Mexico's highest summit, Wheeler Peak. Gauzy curtains of rusty paint cause the view to fade in and out of focus — much like our memories — as words — thoughts — come in and out of mind; three hikers walk on ahead.
The text emerging in this painting comes from ‘The Call of the Wild,’ the epic poem by Robert Service.

Bosque Midday
by Dawn Chandler

Mid-November and it's the first day of the Crane Festival at New Mexico's beloved Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. After spending the morning learning about and observing Sandhill Cranes, I grabbed my lunch — and plein air paint kit — and went and sat beside one of the small bodies of water, attempting to catch its brilliance.

You Wandered to Know
by Santa Fe Artist Dawn Chandler

contemporary abstract ‘textual’ landscape
mixed media on panel
12” x 24” x 2

'You Wandered to Know’ is inspired by the morning view from a friend’s porch in Ute Park, New Mexico, looking north to Baldy Mountain — the highest peak on the Philmont Ranch in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico. I loved how the light was slanting across the land, revealing the different waves of ridges, tree tops, fields. The text emerging in this painting comes from ‘The Call of the Wild,’ the epic poem by Robert Service.
