Last winter I spent a lot of time fantasizing about visiting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge — something I hope to convert from fantasy to reality before too long. While dwelling in those fantasies I was working on this painting, which originally started bottom side up and seemed to be about New Mexico. Then on a whim I turned it upside down, and everything about it changed....
