New Mexico Sky Musing Number 6- Glowing Tesserea, contemporary abstract New Mexico landscape painting by Santa Fe artist Dawn Chandler

Tesserea.

It's a beautiful word that refers to the tiny, usually square, pieces of tile and glass used to create mosaics.

Somewhere in the depths of my memory I must have seen a mosaic made of tesserae this very same shade of blue. For always when I look at this painting, that is what I am reminded of — a certain shade of blue tile or glass.

To take that vague memory of mosaic a bit further, looking more closely at this painting just now, I notice how the background words create a faint but very regular patterning — almost like the patterning within mosaic of each similarly shaped tessera placed one right next to the other.

And that dark black area.... perhaps it's obsidian?

Or back to the vein of landscape, perhaps it's a shadow... or even a presence of some sort. Perhaps a vestige of a long ago fire...
